Maywood Residence Hall

Fire Alarm System Upgrade

Maywood Hall, Clark University’s largest residence hall, is home to more than 225 students and resident advisors. Uniquely designed, it is the only residence hall on campus comprised entirely of suites, making it a central hub of student life.

Safety FIRST

To enhance safety and compliance, TERVA Engineering collaborated closely with Clark University, Dixon Salo Architects, and the Worcester Fire Department. Together, the team delivered a comprehensive fire alarm system upgrade that met the needs of both the University and the City.

The project replaced the existing horn/strobe addressable system with a modern voice evacuation system featuring mass notification capabilities. All fire alarm devices were upgraded—except manual pull stations—with new intelligent, addressable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. In residential suites, detectors were paired with 24VDC low-frequency sounder bases and high-performance ceiling-mounted speakers for clear voice alerts. Dedicated speaker-strobe units were installed in all hearing-impaired rooms to ensure accessibility. Public corridors throughout the building were also equipped with advanced smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, ensuring full coverage and protection for all residents.
