Client: University of Massachusetts
Location: Worcester, MA
Project Size: 350,000 sq. ft.
Architect: ZGF and ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge

When the mission behind the development of a building is rooted in science and healthcare advancement, it fundamentally helps shape every decision and detail. Such is true for TERVA’s collaboration with UMass Chan Medical School and their new state-of-the-art Education and Research Building on the Worcester campus.
At a magnificent 9-stories and 350,000 square feet, the ongoing endeavor is focused around the expansion and consolidation of UMass’ medical programs to accelerate research into new therapeutics for some of the most challenging diseases humans face. The new biomedical research and education facility will support laboratory research growth and the educational enterprise. It will also allow for expanded class sizes to meet the growing workforce needs in health sciences.
With full intent to meet sustainability goals including Net Zero Energy and LEED Gold Certification, the building is being designed to integrate high-performance systems including a double-skin façade and geothermal heat pumps—along with natural daylighting and interactive spaces for discovery and innovation.
A Lofty Milestone
On August 22, 2022, a major milestone was celebrated - the Topping Off Ceremony - a traditional ritual held when the last beam is placed atop a structure during construction. The beam was joyfully signed by hundreds of community members and project leaders.
TERVA is privileged to align with University of Massachusetts on its strategic growth initiative. We are honored to be part of such a colossal and meaningful project that is positioned to lead the future for education, research, and healthcare at the institutional level and beyond. The new building successfully opened in 2024.
This project is a joint venture with Trident Project Advantage Group.
