The Roux Institute at Northeastern University
Client: Northeastern University
Location: Portland, Maine
Project Size: 300,00SF
Northeastern University’s vision of establishing a Portland-based campus and research hub has come to life.
In early 2020, Northeastern expanded its global network with the launch of the Roux Institute in Portland, Maine. Funded by the generous contributions of David and Barbara Roux, alongside support from the Harold Alfond Foundation, the Institute is flourishing thanks to dynamic partnerships with over 200 organizations across industry, government, education, and the broader Maine community.
On September 13, 2024, Northeastern University broke ground on its permanent campus at the former B&M Baked Beans site. This state-of-the-art, multi-building complex will serve as a center for education and research for generations to come.
The TERVA Project Management Team is working closely with Northeastern University and Swingpoint Development to guide the development of the Portland Campus and Roux Institute.
The 13-acre campus will be built in phases, starting with a 245,000 square foot flagship building designed for learning, research, and collaboration. This cutting-edge facility will feature lab and office spaces, a startup incubator, computational labs, research areas, and classrooms, making it a hub for innovation in fields such as AI, life sciences, and other high-tech industries.
The site will also include a new parking garage, daycare facility, additional collaboration spaces in the historic B&M Baked Beans Factory, green spaces, pedestrian and bike paths, as well as future development areas.
A key component of the project, and one of the first visible changes, will be the waterfront restoration. This effort will create public green spaces, pedestrian, and bicycle paths, and restore public access to this section of the waterfront for the first time in over a century.
The $500 million project is expected to be completed by 2028.
