Tufts Medical Center engaged the TERVA Design Solutions Team to develop a design that would renovate the 17,500SF, 28-bed Pediatric Medical-Surgical Unit to an Adult Medical-Surgical Unit to align with the Hospital’s objective to better serve the needs of their patients and the local community.
Addressing the needs
With a goal to serve the community’s needs and a responsibility to meet the requirements of the Department of Public Health for inpatient adult medical-surgical units, the TERVA Design Solutions Team began with a deep refresh of the space including all new finishes, ceilings, lighting, and ADA upgrades. A complete reallocation of support areas was also accomplished for efficiency and to maximize the space. In addition to the architectural updates, the TERVA Design Solutions Team assisted in the design of a new air handling unit with the capacity to serve the 7th-floor Medical-Surgical Unit as well as a future Intensive Care Unit on the 6th floor. The challenge… due to the unique layout of the 7th floor and the need to maintain double-height spaces, the Team had to be creative and strategically locate the ductwork runs from the air handling unit to the building to minimize the impact on patient rooms.
The outcome … a successful upgrade of the space with the ability for growth in the future.
